Supporting Evelyn
Although Evelyn’s illness is complex and the prognosis uncertain, React’s service has provided essential aids and equipment, including a specialist chair to ensure her care needs are met.

Born underweight and diagnosed with microcephaly at birth, Evelyn was found to have cytomegalovirus which is a common herpe virus with no symptoms, but can be extremely dangerous to weakened immune systems and can cause serious birth defects in infants. Evelyn was later additionally diagnosed with cerebral palsy and severe epilepsy. Now aged six years old, Evelyn requires round the clock care and constant postural management.
Upon speaking with a physiotherapist involved in Evelyn’s care, an application to React was made for a P-Pod, to offer her a safe space to keep her comfortably supported at home and the family was astounded by the charity’s efficiency:
“The P-Pod has been a godsend, especially with Evelyn’s seizures worsening. It means she has her own comfortable space, which is especially helpful following a seizure and it is the first piece of equipment which felt right for Evelyn – seating and other equipment provided by the local authority tends to be bulky and clinical but this chair keeps her incredibly well supported”.
With Evelyn’s care needs demanding close attention, finding time outside the usual daily routine can prove challenging. Evelyn’s Mother Georgia told us: “Every day is a new challenge for Evelyn. She likes to keep us on our toes but she’s such a lovely happy girl, we take it day-by-day”.
The family were in need of a simple break to create memories and, as Evelyn is a wheelchair user, specialist accessories were required to keep her protected in all weather conditions. React was called upon again and we were delighted to provide a short break and a specialist wheelchair hood and foot muff to keep Evelyn cozy and Georgia told us: “We had just the best time on our React holiday in Eyemouth, the charity has been an absolute lifeline for us!”
